Our values and characteristics are what give us our unique identity and allows us to workout our… Christian faith…
…our values: Our values are the beliefs we hold that act as anchor points as a church. Hopefully, for a church, they wont sound too surprising!
We love the Bible and regard it as God’s blueprint for living life to the full. We welcome and accept God’s leading from the Bible and acknowledge that we need God’s guidance, personality and power in every part of our lives, which he gives us by his Holy Spirit.
We are adamant that the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ on the cross, and his subsequent incredible resurrection from the dead, is the only way in which people can fully be at peace with themselves and with God. This is an immovable truth for us!
We are thoroughly aware that nothing we can do can gain us acceptance from God – so that even our ‘good works’ aren’t that impressive compared to a holy God. The Bible calls this grace. But this doesn’t make us blasé about how we live our lives – we strive to please God as we are so thankful for his initiative in making a friendship with him possible through the cross.
We understand the need to exercise faith in God and what he has done for us via the cross. It’s not always easy following God but we are convinced that he is for us and will always work on our behalf.
We are passionate about spreading the good news of Jesus to everyone because we believe it’s the best news anyone can hear! And we recognise that we need to share our enthusiasm in a way that is relevant and understandable!
And finally, we love the local church, of which ours is one of many excellent churches in Birmingham. The local church is the place where people from all different walks of life build a community where God demonstrates how his love is all-embracing and how his ways do lead to a peaceful and enjoyable existence!
…Our character: Like people, churches have different character. Part of the fun of finding a church is finding one where the character fits what you’re looking for.
We like to think that Oasis has some distinctive characteristics that you’ll notice if you come along. We mention some of these characteristics here because we value them highly and want to hold ourselves to them. So here they are…
…Friendly! Nearly everyone who comes to Oasis says we are friendly. We aim for a warm welcome and make every effort to help you get connected with us if that is what you’d like.
…Transparent. Perhaps a strange concept – but we try our hardest to do what we say and be people of integrity. We’re about being real not religious. And when we get things wrong – which we will on occasion, we’ll admit it and say sorry.
…Compassionate. We recognise the needs of others as well as our own, and particularly seek to care for the poor and marginalised. We have a broad sweep of different types of people amongst us.
…Inclusive. Part of being friendly and compassionate is being inclusive. We welcome everyone. We stand with everyone and journey with everyone in their pursuit of living fully committed lives in following God.
…Honour Leadership. Leaders in Oasis are servers. There’s no sense of hierarchy or position involved, it’s all about humble servanthood. This said, we also recognise leadership and the calling on leaders to lead!
